Jacob Burton 6/3/17 Desma 9                                                                       Event 3        For my third event, I attended the Design Media Arts MFA Exhibition at the Broad Arts gallery on May 18th. This event was really interesting to me as I was able to see many different and unique pieces of art. The piece of art that I liked the most was the gigantic art piece in the middle of the room. It was a collection of different items that were hanging by strings. The entire object was rotating on a platform. This piece of art was called "Kicker Twister". I was able to seek out the artist which was a gentleman named Lander. When I asked Lander what the meaning was behind this he  first said it means "don't get your kickers in a twist". He then went on to further describe how his purpose of this piece was to symbolize, "making a big deal over little things". He talked about how people often stress over the little things and that som

Jacob Burton 6/3/17 Desma 9                                                                       Blog 9 Space + Art This week I was able to explore through these lectures the final frontier, space. In the first video, it described the powers of 10 and the relative size of things in the universe and the effect of adding another zero. It has always been extremely fascinating to me. I can't even imagine the size and the distance differences between different planets, stars, solar systems, and other space objects. It just goes to show how small we really are in the universe. This video also described how as the powers of 10 increase the farther upward into space we travel. In the first lecture, she described how ancient astronomers named the planets based on greek gods. In the second lecture, she described how contemporary space development started after World War II after the first atomic bomb was tested at a site called Trinity. After this test, and after we dropped two Nucl

Some potential ideas using nanotechnology that range from smart washing machines that know how dirty the clothes are, to artificial red blood cells and different "nanobots" that repair our bodies. Nanotechnlogy has also been brought up for use I the military. The person who is often credited as the person who initiated the conceptual underpinnings of nano technology is Richard Feynman. Feynman was an American theoretical physicist known for his work in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics, and the physics of the super-fluidity of super-cooled liquid helium. Feymna's vision really took hold in the early eighties when nano science and technology truly took off.            Nanotechnology in warfare could become m

Jacob Burton Desma 9 5/19/17                                                                     Blog 7               This week's lecture touched on Neuroscience and art and how they are connected and how they are used in each other's respective fields. The first lecture described consciousness and memory and the state or condition of being conscious. This would fall under the category of neuroscience which is fairly new. Aristotle was one of the first people to think about what is now neuroscience and think about and study the brain. He believed that the brain was the main cause for sleep. However, he also believed that the seat of human thought and emotion was through the heart and the brain's purpose was to cool the blood which would prevent the heart and the lungs from overheating. The second lecture touched on sleep and dreams. Dreaming is an example of an area of study where scientists do not know much about. One thing they do now about dreams though is that 95%

Jacob Burton Desma 9 5/12/17                                                                         Event 2                      For this event, I attended a design media arts graduate solo show by Eli Joteva. This event was extremely interesting as it showed Eli Joteva's beautiful artwork. She had different balls of ice hanging by a rope that were set up around the room. What made these balls interesting is that they were covered with leaves and other such materials and objects. The day I went was the third day of the event, and I could notice that the leaves were dying exposing more of the ice in the center. I also noticed that many of the leaves had fallen to the ground and had died. Another interesting aspect of this art show, was the dripping of the ice. In one corner of the room, there was a big jar at the bottom of one of the sculptures and I was able to hear every drop of water that was coming from the sculpture above. She explained what this all meant in that, it wa

Jacob Burton Desma 9 5/13/17                                                                        Blog 6                    This week we looked at Biotechnology and art. This weeks topic seemed to be the most controversial lecture and section yet, such  experimentation with animals, hybrids between species and other controversial topics. Another example of this is genomes in food. Me personally, researching this, I am torn on using GMOs. The pros of using GMOs is that the flavors can be enhanced and be greater. Using GMOs also prevents diseases to the plants and food. They also create more nutritional benefits. However, there are some cons to using GMOs. One example is the environmental damage it creates. Another con is that in many cases it causes people to have allergic reaction to these foods. Still after researching this, I am torn on the use of GMOs.                      In the lectures, she described how bio technology genetics and technology artists have entered into la
